In 21 century games are partly replacing old fashion cinema industry and some of it based on past events trying to deliver almost historically educational but most of games are set on futures or fantasy world. Those games are often have liner play style which is not that different from movies however as a player have to participate with game to develop a story further it usually play become homogenize with a character deeper. Beside even futuristic genre SF contains some aspect of real life to generate future so people can find a connection with imaginative world to current one which make them believe this could possibly happen. In a way it is a try to predict and experience what future might become later.
Mass effect is set on a world where mankind discovered alien ruins where advanced technology buried. Human used it to built spaceships to travel around planets then found out about different alien species. Through out the story main character face with cosmic horror which being major threat in the world of mass effect. In a graphic wise it used very dark colour code in the game brightest area is a citadel where galactic council are meeting but most of time charter roam around destroyed ruins and planets. In a last series mass effect 3 it start a scene with earth being destroyed by gigantic spaceship which classified as ripper. Fear of invasion from almost unbeatable forces can be related to human history for example when Nazi invade France with their forces people may have experience same fear as the game tried to present. People usually fear a unknown thing because it can not be predicted. Therefore visualizing an event on future world could be a preparation exercise for upcoming fear from space where mankind still have not figure out completely.
Bioshock is more related to a historical background then mass effect as it is based on 19th century pre world war America. It is a also science fiction but more focus on a Steampunk which is sub-genre of SF. Compare to mass effect it tried to present a perfect paradise city set on a sky with much brighter colour code graphics. Also style of architecture in the game is based on historical colonial style which western are be used to see. Interesting fact is that instead of cosmic horror Bioshock shows anxiety of people towards foreigners which represent 19th extreme nationalism with racism. Similar to mass effect this game try to show to audience fear from being differences and unknown as a race which become trigger to a revolution. First few stages of game shows alternative time line where Belle Époque era was kept and developed on the air by showing peaceful atmosphere and hope for a technology which represent a bright future. Then during the game player meets extremist lunatic that blind by religion with ideology as enemies and experience how they are changing a city into chaotic battleground.
